Friends of Corcoran Lagoon Beach (FoCLB) assists Santa Cruz County Parks in meeting its mission to provide a safe, well-designed and maintained County beach access and assists County Planning and County Parks in meeting management obligations for wildlife habitat protection known as Corcoran Lagoon Beach.
Vision
Recognizing the County's recreational goals for its park lands, we see a future where the entrance to Corcoran Lagoon Beach is enhanced to reflect its uniqueness among County parks with its natural resources of sand, water and wildlife habitat. We see a future where shorebird nesting habitat is preserved and protected according to the County's Local Coastal Program. We see a future where all visitors to this County beach will benefit from its excellence as a living beach in the midst of a residential area.
Goals
1. Upgrade the physical infrastructure of the park entrance.
2. Preserve and protect wildlife habitat.
3. Encourage educational field trips.
4. Facilitate funding.
Objectives
1. Have the Parks Department re-design and install signage to name the County beach park (e.g., Corcoran Lagoon Beach Park) and to list park rules for visitors. Incorporate, in the signage, the park's wildlife resources (native flora and fauna) and identify this park as an entrance to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
2. Have the Parks Department provide a more esthetic, natural-colored seasonal public toilet that can be incorporated at the entrance.
3. Partner with the County Planning Department and wildlife organizations such as Point Blue, formerly PRBO Conservation Science, to provide seasonal protection of shorebird nests. Have the Parks Department install new "Nesting Area - No Dogs" signs.
4. Encourage pro-active coordination between the County and CA Fish & Wildlife to protect the lagoon outflow from man-made breaching. Help regulatory agencies by watching for and reporting illegal lagoon breaching activities.
5. Have the Public Works Department paint the existing concrete barriers a sandy color and/or install a more natural, functioning sand barrier on E. Cliff Drive that will also continue to protect shorebird nesting habitat adjacent to the roadway.
6. Have a crosswalk designed and installed to provide walkers a safe crossing from the Francis L. Markey Public Nature Trail to the Corcoran Lagoon Beach entrance east of the bridge.
7. Help organize educational opportunities for all residents, working through schools and with County Parks and Recreation.
8. Enourage the County to replace East Cliff Drive across Corcoran Lagoon with a causeway, to eliminate flooding on the roadway, as well as to allow the lagoon to function naturally.
